How to Teach Afraid Students with 100% Success

There's a way to work with afraid students that's significantly more effective than teaching them swimming mechanics. There's a body of information for students to learn which is essential for all swimmers, children and adults, afraid and not afraid, in order for them to be as safe as possible in water. These two items—the method and the information — are our contributions to Swimming. They have stopped every instructor-in-training in their tracks and given them powerful new capabilities. No skeptic goes home unchanged.

Become a Licensed Afraid Student Instructor (LASI).

You will see the full system in action throughout your training and learn every angle of it that can fit into 9 days (dinner plus the 8 days of training). You'll learn the rest in the field and during six monthly teleconferences that support your in-the-field teaching for the first half-year. Teleconferences of one hour each answer all questions that arise. When you finish the Full Training, you'll be able to teach our introductory half-day "mini-class" (an opportunity for prospective students to learn about the system and to break through), Beginning class and our Next Step class. The combination of the latter two classes takes a student to freedom in deep water and readiness to learn strokes from you, regardless of where they began. They cannot find this level or rate of progress anywhere else, so 3500 adults internationally have told us since 1983.

The full training program is approximately 60 hours, classroom and warm pool. The book at the left is required reading before attendance at the training. There are morning and afternoon sessions each day. You will receive a 100-page training/teaching manual including our 60-page handbook for students. The training class size is limited. If you bring a student to participate in the Beginning class, you may deduct $75 from your course fee. Enroll him/her now. You may reduce your training fee by $100 for each instructor you bring into the training. You should plan 2-3 days of downtime after completing the training in order to reorient yourself.

Learning will be at your own pace, commensurate with MSI's teaching philosophy. Depending on your learning pace and your current understanding, the completion of your training will most likely be during this 9-day period. The 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 Licensees continued to learn in the monthly teleconferences as they began teaching their classes back home. The goal is to embody the MSI system so that you can be as effective as MSI. Any further training and its cost will depend on what you need. The training is designed to provide all learning you need in the 9 days plus our 12 monthly teleconferences. Further training takes place with discussion of your class feedback forms once you open your own Miracle Swimming classes.

Licensees agree to teach the full Miracle Swimming course 3 times per year in order to keep the material fresh and to continue to learn it.

When Is the Next Training?
You can take the training completely in person, or in a blended training: we're partway through putting a large segment of the training online. When you complete the online training, you'll have 6 months in which to attend and complete the hands-on segment for 2 days (extendable to 5 days if you wish for extra exposure and learning).

Two Full Trainings in 2008:
Westfield, MA April 11-19
Palm Springs, CA, November 1-9, extendable to November 15.

Two-day hands-on training for students who have completed the online training:
Palm Springs, November 3, 4
More to be added

We will add hands-on trainings to others of the already scheduled Beginning classes on our calendar after April 1. If you go to our schedule you can get an idea of our options. We'll launch the online training on April 1.

Frequently Asked Question:
Question: "Can you give the training program in less time?"

Answer: No, just as you can't fly from London to New York in twenty minutes. We've endeavored to keep the arrangements and schedule simple and do-able. We want you to be completely prepared to succeed with afraid students and teach Miracle Swimming.

You will teach 1-2 skills in the last two sessions of the Beginning class and receive feedback from students, peers, and Trainer. You'll finish the Instructor Training Manual material. We'll cover all the rest of your questions to prepare you to greet your afraid adults when you get home with confidence that you know something new that will make all the difference in the world to them. You will have learned a new way to see. You'll have new language to communicate with, a language that afraid students understand and are hungry for. You'll be the bridge between where they are and where they want to be. Please see our licensees' comments at the right. "I'm 150% sold on this method. My apologies to the thousands who have been taught with conventional methods."—John Thorburn, Dallas Aquatic Masters

"It's been a fabulous experience.... The MSI Training helped me to look at our whole program for kids and alter it to include what I learned from MSI. I've enjoyed teaching again in a way I haven't in a long time. The Training fulfilled my expectations that it would be a new approach, an innovative way to teach, especially in an area that seemed to be a dead end: adult lessons."
— Cori Myka, Orca Swim School, Seattle, WA

"I appreciate your intuitive and psychic approach and your grounded way of relaying it so that it doesn't sound "woo-woo." I believe you are using a (r)evolutionary approach to teaching and to helping people ovecome their fear.
—Nancy Ward, Total Immersion

"Unreal. Why didn't anyone ever think of this before? With this information, I'm unstoppable."
— Ben Komer, Leahi Swim School

"Today I gave a lesson to a swimmer with skills who's afraid. We did 2 hours of no technique, just being. At one point he said he felt sad. When I asked why, he said he was sad because it took 42 years to finally be in the water without goggles and just be."
— John Quintana, Virtual Swim
