Learn backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Basics of each stroke, Drills, Videotaping, turns, fun. You need not have taken the Freestyle class first, but it's helpful. 42 hours. One hour on land begins each class session. To learn these strokes, you need to be completely comfortable in water up to 5'9". The better you know the water, the quicker and easier you'll learn.

You'll need soft, comfortable fins that fit. We recommend TYR Split fins or AquaSphere Fitness Fins.
Try them in the pool before class to make sure they're easy and comfortable to use.
Bring 1-2 rash guards, lycra shirts to protect you from the sun. Should fit like a glove.
You may wish to have a neoprene vest. Rent from MSI ($25 for 11 days) or purchase.

Introduction to the Ocean: 101

Introduction to being in the ocean. How to get in, float in salt water, be comfortable with waves, navigate breakers, locomote from here to there, be at ease. Learn about undertows, currents, play, critters, and safety.
Four 3-hour classes; land and ocean portions at each class. Course fee includes course and transportation to classes. Hotel is extra: recommendations below.

Goggles and cap welcome. Rash guard recommended (a sun blocking shirt). We recommend clear goggles so you can see well in the water (dark goggles are too dark).

Prerequisite: MSI Beginning class or for non-graduate family members/friends, the ability to put face in water comfortably, float and unfloat on front and back, and roll over.

Transportation package from Tampa International Airport: $100 round trip per person shared ride including tip if you arrive at Tampa Airport by 3 p.m. Thursday (or the day before class begins). Depart hotel below for airport at 1:00 or 1:30 Sunday, (the day class ends). Fly Sunday after 3:30 p.m. Hotel is 1.25 hours from Tampa airport. Sarasota Airport is 20 minutes from our hotels, yet more expensive to fly to. Take cab from SRQ (Sarasota airport) or rent car.
Stay at one of these two hotels unless you're taking the Next Step class at Aloha Kai. If you are, you could just as easily stay there.

Introduction to the Ocean, 202: August 5-7, 2010

Sequel to Ocean 101, the introduction to being in the ocean. Review being in the ocean. Then learn to use snorkel equipment and go snorkeling, conditions-permitting, devote a session to becoming comfortable in water over your head in the gulf, begin to body surf, use a boogie-board, and take a sea-kayaking lesson and if class is interested, SUP (Stand Up Paddling). Fee includes rentals of fun-gear.

February 10, the balance will be charged to your credit card. As of February 10, 2009, the trip fee is nonrefundable ($1679 which is all but hotel). Purchase trip insurance within two weeks of registering to cover surprise cancellations. We've had good experience with Access America, 1-800-284-8300. Arrange your own air fare to Miami. Arrive by 2 p.m. on March 14 for group transfer to Key Largo. Air fare to Miami extra. Plan your flight out of Miami after 12 noon on March 22nd or 12 noon on the 26th if you stay for the dive vacation. $470 will be charged at Checkout, though it will say the full amount will be charged.
Course fee includes: dive course, shared
hotel room with one classmate for 8 nights, airport transfers, and dive equipment except for mask, fins, snorkel which you should purchase. PMS membership for 2009 is $40 and extra (for non-current members). Single supplement $685 (for spouse or friend accompanying you, or for a single). The friend would also pay a guest fee of $150 to share transportation to/from the airport, group activities, to class locations, etc.
The balance is due February 10, 2009.
The course fee includes transportation to class events, plus airport transfers. If you'd like your own car on a day or half-day off, you're welcome to rent one for the time needed. If you choose to rent your own car, the class transportation cost will not be reduced.
After you register, a list of items to take to the class will be sent along with information about purchasing snorkeling gear (mask, fins, snorkel).
Once you register, we'll let you know how to purchase the course materials, "PADI Crew Pack."
Minimum class size: 4 by January 15
Stay for the dive vacation in Key Largo after you're certified. This is the best way to get dive experience while the information and skills are fresh, and to take your diving above student level. It makes a big difference in building your confidence to dive again after this trip. Dive vacation is March 21 or 22 (depending on when we finish the course) to March 26. Dive days March 21-25 including at least one night dive (optional). $1187 for 4 nights hotel shared with classmate, or $944 for dive shop dorm (bunk beds, shared kitchen, common space).
